The history of sunglasses – from the Dark Ages to today!

James Rose - Thursday, May 05, 2011

The first picture of someone wearing sunglasses is in a painting by Tommaso da Modena – the year? 1352. The sunglasses?

Ray-Ban Aviators.

Okay, we made that part up (they were actually Tom Ford sunglasses), but Modena’s painting is the precursor to millions of images – from historical paintings to high fashion photographs – that chart the history of designer sunglasses.

So when were sunglasses invented?

Well here’s what we know…

The ‘invention’ of sunglasses occurred between 1268 and 1289.

However, the Roman Emperor and famous pyromaniac, Nero, watched the gladiators in the Colosseum through his classic pre- Gucci sunglasses - a pair of polished light emerald gems held up to his eyes. No doubt by some poor sod destined to become big cat food before the day’s end!

Foster Grants take designer sunglasses mainstream

The first ever mass produced sunglasses were made by Sam Foster in 1929.

Sold on the beaches of Atlanta and New Jersey, ‘Foster Grants’ could be seen as the fore-runners of modern brands likeOliver Peoples, Police andPersol sunglasses – but it wasn’t until the US Army got involved in designer sunglasses that things really got going...

What do glad-wrap and designer sunglasses have in common?

In the same way that glad wrap evolved from the US Army’s need for a wrap to protect their tanks (seriously), the next advance in the history of men’s designer sunglasses came about when their pilots needed protection from high altitude glare.

The sunglasses developed by Bausch & Lomb in the 1930’s were the precursor toPolaroid sunglasses in 1936 and the very first Ray-Ban Aviator sunglasses in 1937.

The movie star demand for designer sunglasses

Aviators, which Ray-Ban sunglasses specifically created with longer lenses to give pilots extra glare protection, soon became a hit with film stars, who wore them both as a fashion statement and – you guessed it – to hide from the paparazzi!

Designer sunglasses meet high-fashion and public popularity

Of course, once designer sunglasses became popular with the film and celebrity-set, it wasn’t long before the general public picked up the trend.

By the 1970's fashion designers like Gucci, Prada, Dior and Bvglari – previously known for their clothing and accessories – began putting their name to truly authentic designer sunglasses.

The most popular designer sunglasses in 2011!

Apart from Nero’s designer emeralds held to the eyes idea (bound to make a comeback at footy grounds around the country this season), some of thelatest designer sunglasses today includebolle sunglasses, carrera sunglasses and chanel sunglasses.

The Benn deep pink and aqua grid check non-iron cutaway slim fit shirt is a perfect example!

Making a move and striking a pose, the tactician is often channeling chess-like strategies in his check business shirts – like the masterful Deacon dark blue large gingham check slim fit shirt.

Mens dress shirts for the bold

Unafraid of sending strong signals to the people around them, bold men make serious fashion statements with shirts like the Attlee pink Prince of Wales non-iron cutaway slim fit shirt  – everybody knows that a man who wears a pink business shirt oozes confidence!

For the audacious man who prefers a more tailored business shirt, the Multi-stripe Black Label informal shirt  is king. This smooth design with multicolored stripes is definitely an elegant way to get noticed!

A 'brief' history of women's underwear - from fig leaf to fashion statement

James Rose - Wednesday, April 27, 2011

Ever wondered how we made it from the fluttering fig leaf to the iconic Wonderbra and beyond? Women’s underwear sure has come a long way over the millenniums. Here are a few highlights (and lowlights) of women’s underwear through history:

Olympic women’s underwear – my small, thin Greek sports bra

So you thought the sports bra was a relatively modern invention? The original sports bra (or strophium as Aristotle and Socrates liked to cal them them) were actually first worn by the bounce-inclined, athletic goddesses of ancient Greece.

Not quite as supportive as the Glamorise Active Comfort Wrap Sports Bra of course, but then what’s a girl to expect from a thin band of leather wrapped around her chest?

She’s wearing no knickers (for at least a few hundred years)

Meanwhile, over in Ancient Rome men and women were strutting around in their loin cloths under togas. This fafhion fad disappeared faster than you could say ‘Crocs’ with the fall off Rome and no women’s underwear was worn at all for the next few hundred years!

Fortunately, these days you can enjoy that no knickers feel while wearing luxurious Le Mystere womens panties - a boy cut that looks far more elegant and sexy than a piece of old sheet tied between your legs.

Mediaeval women’s underwear - from smock to chemise

When women finally decided they’d had enough of knights trying to peek up their dresses in the grand stand at jousting events, women’s underwear made a big comeback in the shape of long linen smocks, later known as shifts.

You can see the influence of the shift in the far more feminine, pretty and soft chemise of today – and one of the most beautiful and stylish is the Calvin Klein Essentials with Lace Chemise.

Waist not, want not - the corset

As the lights came on after the Dark Ages, it was imperative that a girl look her best at all times. And while there’s no one person to blame for the travesty known as the corset, King Henry II’s wife banning thick-waisted women from attending court certainly didn’t help.

This meant 16th century gals had to take a deep breath and hold it for the next few hundred years, as they watched gentlemen callers gorge on food, while looking pretty, feeling ravenous and on the verge of passing out in the name of pencil thin waists.

So let out a collective sigh of relief that you were born in the age of BALI wire-free bras.

Women’s underwear needs become a ‘passion for comfort’

By the end of the 1800s corsets were being tossed in the stable attic on top of the unpacked Ab Buster equipment and Tae Bo videos, as the new ‘liberty bodice’ brought almost as much delight and comfort to women around the world as the BALI Passion For Comfort bra does today.

Then in 1913, Mary Phelps Jacob (aka Caresse Crosby) patented the first modern bra – two hankies joined with pink ribbon. We can only imagine what she would have made of the beautiful bras of today – but we’ll thank her foresight forever!

20th  century women’s underwear – burn, poke and push

In the 1960s women’s libers protested against the oppressive Miss America pageant by throwing their bras and other girlie accessories into a‘freedom trash can’, before eighties diva Madonna came up with a much more fun way to express yourself as a powerful woman and turned bras into pointed lethal fashion statements to be worn on the outside.

Then in the 90s, after one too many male eyes were lost in the name of lust, inspiring designers took a 1935 invention that supported the bust and created ‘dramatic cleavage’ to create the modern Wonderbra – leading to an explosion in rear end traffic accidents.

Today, women’s underwear is about celebrating and embracing womanhood. The range of styles and fabrics reflect individual style, personality and are all about comfort. We can even have ‘what he’s having’, in girl power versions of boy shorts and boxers.

Of course, there’s no reason you and your ‘Adam’ can’t still run around the garden bobbing for apples in nothing more than a well fitted fig leaf!

Are you sure your designer sunglasses are the real deal?

James Rose - Tuesday, March 29, 2011

Every year, as the top icons of fashion like Chanel,D&G, Tom Ford andRay Ban roll out their latest designer sunglasses styles, cheap imitators are out looking to cash in on unwary buyers.

There’s nothing quite like authentic designer sunglasses for quality and protection – not to mention that x-factor! We love our brands as much as you, so here are five ways to find out if the sunnies you’re buying are the genuine article.

Real designer sunglasses are worth their weight

Fake sunglasses are cheap for a reason. While authentic designer sunglasses are generally made from high quality materials, cheap sunglasses are made cheap. That means poor quality materials and workmanship.

Get a feel for the weight and sturdiness of the sunglasses. If they feel light, or flimsy, there’s a good chance that unlike authenticOliver Peoples, Police, and Oakley sunglasses – the one’s you’re holding are not the real deal!

If the logo fits, where it!

Authentic designer sunglasses use trademarked logos that are illegal to replicate. So the manufacturers of imitation designer sunglasses use similar, but not identical logos.

Take a good look at the logo on a pair of sunglasses you know are genuine, then compare it with the possible fakes. You’ll find small differences. An extra space between the D and G in D&G designer sunglasses is a good example.

Cheap designer sunglasses have super cheap price tags.

While some companies (like yours truly) can source and sell authentic designer sunglasses for around half the normal retail price, it’s just not possible to get genuine designer sunglasses for the twenty or thirty-odd dollars that some fakes sell for.

If the price is ridiculously cheap, the quality will be too - and you’ll be the one paying for it in the long run!

Designer sunglasses come out of the box

Fake or replica sunglasses don’t sell with the authentic tags and packaging that come with the real thing. Even designer sunglasses on sale – as long as they’re authentic - will always come with genuine packaging.

If there are no tags, product information, or sunglasses case with the correct brand logo (or if it’s a plain unmarked case) you’ve probably found a pair of fake sunglasses.

Got the special code? Your designer sunglasses do

Every pair of designer sunglasses has its own unique code embedded into the inside of one of the legs. There might also be a model number, along with the frame size and colour.

Steel framed glasses usually have this code engraved into the metal. Similarly, moulded frames will have the code embedded into the material. You guessed it – cheap designer sunglasses won’t have this code, and you’ll know you’re onto a fraud!

How to buy authentic sunglasses safely

As we mentioned, you certainly can buy designer sunglasses for a fantastic price! Buying online is a great option, just be sure that the retailer is reputable, offers you a money back guarantee and is based in Australia.

Top 10 celebrity sunglasses - what designer shades is your favourite A lister wearing in 2011?

James Rose - Thursday, March 17, 2011

Ok fashion setters, pull out your style notes because we’re about to reveal who’s hot and who’s wearing what in the way of designer sunglasses this year. That way, you can get the designer sunglasses the stars are wearing online in Australia for the price they pay in the US and Europe less – while your friends go green with envy.

Wayfarer - the only sunglasses (in the world) for Rihanna

Whether she’s getting behind her man at the stadium, strutting the streets of LA, or buying up big in the adult shops of Sydney, Rihanna has been adding cutting edge class to the classic Ray Ban 2140 Wayfarer Black. These women’s designer sunglasses are a must have for sexy divas and pop stars.

VIP designer sunglasses that scream Paris

We admit that sometimes Paris Hilton is more sassy than classy, but she’s definitely has upped the ante this year, slipping on the Dior Coccotte Glossy 1 in Shiny Black to add a little sophistication to her look. They also get the tick of approval from Hollywood royalty Catherine Zeta Jones.

Aviators – the celebrity rebel designer sunglasses

What do Lenny Kravitz, Russell Crowe and Jon Hamm aka Don Draper have in common? Apart from a rock’n’roll reputation and knack for effortless cool, they’ve each embraced their inner rebel by donning the Ray-Ban 3025 Aviator. Who needs top guns, when you can be a Mad Man?

Designer sunglasses for paparrazi protection

Every celebrity worth their status has a bad paparazzi day – just ask Britney! That’s why she loves her Tom Ford Whitney Black designer sunglasses. Recently taking time out in Paris, Demi Moore hid from the ‘paps’ behind a pair – and wore an appropriate frock for riding in limos!

From Bond to…bondage?

Few celebs ooze style and sophistication quite like former 007, Pierce Brosnan, and soon to be leather-clad Catwoman, Anne Hathaway (although James Franco did his best to ruin that at the Oscars). They’ve both recently been snapped wearing Oliver Peoples KVA sunglasses, which also happen to be the latest shades of choice for Usher and Jeremy Piven of Entourage.

24 hour party people

When perennial party girl Lindsay Lohan was sentenced to 90 days in jail, she arrived wearing her classic Ray-Ban Clubmaster designer sunglasses. These shades have also been spotted in the early hours protecting the eyes of ‘Billionaire’ cowriter and muso Bruno Mars and scrumptious Piratess of the Caribbean, Zoe Saldana from the blinding sunrise rays. In other words, if your mantra is “I go hard, and I don’t go home’, this is the eyewear for you.

Celebrity yummy mummy sunglasses

There’s a very good reason Stifler’s mum will always have a place in the hearts of young men (and those who wish they still were). They know that their friends mother’s will never look like Jessica Alba, Gwen Steffani and Kate Moss who are busy shopping on Rodeo Drive or London’s West End wearing their Prada 18IS ladies designer sunglasses.

It’s Chanel darling

It’s been said that if you don’t own a pair of Chanel 5076H, you aren’t really wearing designer sunglasses. And if you don’t know who’s wearing them, you don’t know your celebrities! Kate Winslet and Eva Longoria love these designer sunglasses – and Courtney Cox is such a fan she’s almost made this style her own!

Gen Y? Because we can.

Wondering what the younger generation of uber-cool A-listers are wearing? Designed in collaboration with Gen Y IT girl Zooey Deschanel, the aptly named Oliver Peoples Zooey Ivory Shell are the latest designer sunglasses to be worn by both our favourite Jessicas (Alba and Biel), who love their slightly kooky, yet sophisticated look.

Sunglasses fit for the $132 million man

What designer sunglasses list would be complete without a latino super star footballer? When Cristiano Ronaldo’s not kick goals on the field, he’s scoring in the fashion stakes – and with the babes - in his Tom Ford Silvano Havana sunglasses!

Build your own celebrity status

So now you know what designer sunnies the celebs are wearing this year. If you want a swooning fan base of your own, let you friends know that you can all buy designer sunglasses online through Promotions Magic at 30 – 50% off the RRP!

The great Charles Tyrwhitt shirt steal - or why we love our strong Aussie dollar...

James Rose - Monday, March 14, 2011

If you’ve ever thought about buying business shirts overseas, without a doubt, now is the best time to act! You see, since September 2008 the Aussie dollar has risen over 50% against the once Great British Pound - from around 40 pence to 62 pence for one dollar.

This means you can now buy tailored business shirts from the UK for about 30% less than you would have paid a few years ago. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg of good news.

How much less will I pay for English business shirts now?

When you buy business shirts online from overseas it comes down to the exchange rate between Australia, and the currency of the country you’re buying from.

Say you were buying a premium UK business shirt worth 60GBP (about average for a high quality shirt from a top London tailor). If one Australian dollar was only buying 40 pence – as it was a couple of years back - you’d be up for about $140 Aussie dollars.

But fast forward to 2011 where the Aussie dollar is now worth 62 pence and you can get the same business shirt for just $96.00!

Better yet, get FOUR Charles Tyrwhitt shirts for GBP90

You might already know that many of the world’s finest business shirts come from the UK. And our favourite shirts – by Charles Tyrwhitt – are tailored and shipped from their famous Jermyn Street store in London.

So to really give the Pound a good old kicking while it’s down, Promotions Magic have teamed up with Charles Tyrwhitt to offer you a deal of four business shirts for just GBP90.

In other words, instead of paying 60GBP for just one of these shirts, you can choose any 4 for GBP22.50 each.

Or a steal at just $36 a shirt, instead of $96…or $140!

So let’s take a look at the whole iceberg for a moment:

Firstly, we worked out that the strength of the dollar means people in Australia can get business shirts from the UK that were $140 two years ago for around $96 today - or 30% cheaper. Not bad at all.

But if you buy them through our four business shirts for GBP90 special offer it gets even better because you’ll pay around $145.00 for the lot – or about AUD36 a piece for four of the finest business shirts in the world .

In other words, 62% less than the price of four high quality business shirts bought in the UK today – or a whopping 93% less than you’d have paid 2 years ago!

So if you’re looking for a steal on premium quality English business shirts, take advantage of our Charles Tyrwhitt shirt special while the proud Aussie dollar is flying high.

Men’s business shirt faux pas (or, 5 ways Not to wear them)

James Rose - Monday, March 14, 2011

Should you really be worried about the way you wear your business shirt? It all depends, so let’s rephrase. Do you like to look professional at work? And do you enjoy being the object of swooning glances from ladies in the office and out on the town?

If so, making the effort to buy great quality business shirts is a step in the right direction. Of course, how you wear them is just as crucial. Avoiding these five common men’s business shirt faux pas will have you on your way to success in all the important areas of life.

The un-tucked business shirt

Don’t laugh, we’ve all been guilty of this one. It might be casual Friday, but simply un-tucking the same business shirt you wore with your suit on Monday, and adding a pair of jeans, is a big fashion faux pas.

If you really want to wear your shirt un-tucked, rather than wearing a strictly formal shirts , choose a deliberately casual, tailored cut shirt like these Charles Tyrwhitt styles that come into the waist and are a little shorter cut.

If the work shirt don’t fit…don’t wear it to work

Ever find yourself stuffing metres of extra shirt into your trousers? This is a certain sign that you’re wearing a business shirt that’s simply too big. Billowing work shirts are not a good look in the office (cast your mind back to the Seinfeld puffy shirt episode if you don’t believe us).

Rather than looking a little like a tent on legs, or a half inflated hot air balloon, take time to measure yourself up properly and then look at these tailored cut business shirts by Charles Tyrwhitt .

Don’t wear patterned formal shirts with patterned suits

Generally, one piece of patterned clothing per outfit is quite enough. There are some beautiful striped and checked Charles Tyrwhitt business shirts , all best worn with plainer style suits or pants.

Save your favourite pin stripe business suit, for example, to wear with one of these very stylish, low key Charles Tyrwhitt cotton work shirts .

Business shirts with long sleeves that are too short

This is especially important when you’re wearing a business suit. A great rule of thumb to follow is that you’re shirt cuffs should extend about half an inch beyond your suit sleeves.

If in doubt – or if regular shirt sizes don’t give you the right length – measure your arm length and use the Charles Tyrwhitt guide to make sure your work shirt fits perfectly.

Leave the midriff tops to the girls.

Wearing a tie with your work shirt? Then button-up!

Wearing a tie without the top button of your formal shirt done up is definitely not on. “But I feel like I’m being strangled” we hear you say! Well, there’s a reason for that…

If your mens dress shirts feel too tight with the top button done up, they’re too small. So use the two finger test. You should be able to comfortably slip two fingers (side by side) between your shirt collar and neck. To look and feel comfortable all day measure up for these perfect business shirt and tie combos

The way you dress plays a big part in many aspects of your life – from the way we’re perceived professionally – to the way we’re perceived romantically. So if there’s someone in the office you’re looking to impress – be it your boss or the office beauty – it’s time to pull your socks up and buy high quality Charles Tyrwhitt men’s business shirts online! And tuck those works shirts in!
